PARTICIPATE IN A STUDY ON AI-Assisted Creativity and Learning:

About the project

It is likely that generative artificial intelligence will have a paradigmatic effect on how we create and learn. Right now, however, these systems are object of much suspicion. Colloquial understanding sees them, on one hand, as stochastic plagiarists offering little-to-no original value and, on another, as one an existential threat to creative labor. Educators, in turn, are one their own to find evidence of learning in anything algorithms had a role in developing. For all these concerns, there is little understanding of what it means to think with AI and how exactly generative models participate in creativity. This doctoral research project investigates how generative artificial intelligence is starting to shape learning and students’ creative process in higher education.

Research questions

1. How is generative AI shaping university students’ learning and creativity?
2. What are the opportunities and challenges associated with AI and creative learning?

How to participate

Prospective participants should contact us via andre.mestre@uib.no to receive further information on the study and to schedule a creative “think aloud” session. In your e-mail, please state your university affiliation/program and include a brief description of your experience with generative AI.

The study will last between 1,5 and 2 hours and will be conducted over Zoom. During the session participants will be asked to brainstorm a design concept using ChatGPT and to work on this design using a visual generative AI system of their choice (Midjourney, DALL·E, Stable Diffusion, or other). For the duration of the study, participants should voice their thoughts and decision-making process to be best of their abilities. Please note that the study will be conducted in English.

Why participate?

Participating in a study can be a very positive experience. This study will offer an opportunity to reflect on your creative practice, providing a space to develop ideas and experiences that could otherwise be difficult to formulate. For students who are curious about academic research, participating in an empirical study will also bring insight into how research is carried out.

Compensation

Participants will receive a 200 kr gift card from Godt Brød upon completing the study.

Eligibility

Participants should be university students at the bachelor’s and master’s level in disciplines such as design, architecture, and visual arts. No prior experience with AI is required. Participants will receive a document with basic guidelines and best practices for prompt composition.

Privacy in the collection and storage of data

The study will require collection, recording and analysis of personal data in the form of screen-captured video and voice recordings. Please note that video of the participant’s face will not be recorded, just their voice and computer screen. Data collected will be stored in secure university devices and approved online storage. Data will also de-identified to guarantee anonymity.
